What are Ground Source Heat Pumps?

Ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) are an environmentally friendly and highly effective heating technology that takes heat from the ground and transfers it into a building via radiators or underfloor heating. GSHPs are becoming an increasingly popular option for homeowners and businesses that are looking for a greener and more cost-effective alternative to conventional heating systems. This is because GSHPs dramatically reduce both carbon emissions and energy expenditures.

Benefits of Ground Source Heat Pumps

Energy Efficient

Energy efficiency is a major selling point for GSHPs. They can produce up to four times as much heating or cooling for each kilowatt hour of power consumed by transporting heat to or from the ground. That will cut your energy costs and your carbon footprint significantly.

Eco-Friendy

The environmental friendliness of GSHPs is one of their appealing benefits. When compared to standard HVAC systems, these emit far fewer greenhouse gases. They help make the globe greener and cleaner by decreasing the need for nonrenewable energy sources.

Lower Operating Costs

Ground source heat pumps have lower ongoing expenses than conventional heating systems, which more than makes up for the greater initial installation cost. You'll be able to cut back on heating and cooling costs considerably over time.

Works All Year Round

GSHPs keep their efficiency year-round. Consistent heating and cooling, no matter the weather, is made possible by the generally constant ground temperature.

Our Ground Source Heat Pump Installation Process

We provide a comprehensive installation service, beginning with a consultation to understand your heating requirements and determine the most suitable system for your property. The next step is for our engineers to conduct a full design service, in order to first evaluate the suitability of the installation area and then to ensure that we select the most appropriate system and location for your requirements.

After we have selected the most suitable system and location, we will present you with a comprehensive quotation that outlines all of the expenses and deadlines for the installation of the system. Before we begin the installation procedure, we will also take the necessary steps to guarantee that all planning licences and building laws have been met and complied with.

Our technicians will install your GSHP system to the highest possible levels of quality and safety, and they will make sure that all work is carried out in accordance with the building laws and the approvals granted by the planning authorities. In addition to this, we will give you detailed instructions on how to operate and maintain your new GSHP system.

Ground Source Heat Pumps FAQs

How much space is required for ground source heat pumps?

Horizontal Ground Source Heat Pumps

Although horizontal GSHPs save energy, they require a lot of floor area. It is recommended that between 600 and 1200 square metres of clear ground be set aside for a typical family home. In addition, trenches of at least 100 metres in length are required for most horizontal collector arrays.

Some homeowners go for an unconventional method of pipe organisation known as "slinkies," which involves installing the pipes in a series of interconnected loops. While this may help you save some room, it may come at the expense of your ground-source heat pump's performance.

Vertical Ground Source Heat Pumps

In contrast, vertical GSHPs have a smaller footprint. Since boreholes have been dug vertically into the ground, they can be used even if there is a scarcity of horizontal area. The soil type and system size determine the required drilling depth and number. Typically, three boreholes ranging in depth from 70 to 120 metres would be needed for a ground source heat pump system of 8 kilowatts (kW).

How long does it take to install a ground source heat pump?

Ground source heating systems require extensive preparation and installation, which might take up to a week to finish. Underground plumbing and borehole digging can take an additional day or two, depending on geological circumstances, but the heat pump unit itself can be installed in a single day. At last, you'll need to set up the heat pump unit and link it to your building's ductwork.

Do I need planning permission?

Ground source heat pumps are generally considered a permitted development meaning homeowners do not need specific planning approval to install one.

If you live in a listed area, property, or conservation area, or plan to install more than one ground source heat pump, you may need special approval from the local government. An expert heat pump installer in your area will be familiar with the rules and regulations that apply to your home and will be able to give you particular guidance.
